Description of the 2013 -2014 season

The Chamber music programme is subtitled “Allegro con fuoco” (Fiery allegro). Our titles no longer emphasise the theme of the concert, which in the past, were often too specious. Each concert has its own story related to the study and analysis effected by the interpreting musician who is thus able to perform the music in the best possible way. Our programmes will never include ‘kaleidoscopic’ concerts. Seen from another angle, in times of a general decline in all things cultural to focus on the specific or on specialisation reduces the possibility of awakening interest in new generations living in a world of vast diffusion of information and school curricula which totally ignore any reference to music. The traditional public understands this and enjoys listening again to performances of the great repertoire, by no means aged through repetition but renewed and invigorated by new interpretations which great musicians present during the season. Thus the title ‘Allegro con Fuoco’ hints at the renewed opportunity of getting to know or rediscovering masterpieces, milestones of chamber music, to those who, through age or different cultures, have not yet had the opportunity of experiencing its fascination. A new audience is surely a guarantee for the future.

Among the concerts of this season, as usual, the piano is king with its monumental opus in combination with great and famous performers such as Schiff and Sokolov and the up-and-coming young performers: Schuch, Bacchetti and Gamba. However string instruments are, as always, a significant part of the programme with quartets often together with other musicians performing music not often heard: the Artemis Quartet with the cellist Gautier Capuçon, the Belcea Quartet with the clarinettist Rosanna Rossignoli. Of great significance are the performance under the direction of Jordi Savall of the six Brandenburg concerti, the splendid ‘tableau parisien’ sung by Anne Sofie von Otter, the strings of Shlomo Mintz, Soni Tchakerian, and Domenico Nordio, and lastly the Trio di Parma one of the Italian chamber ensembles fast becoming a traditional expression of classical music culture.

The repertory is strictly classical with a few explorations in the field of modern music. But one should not talk of ‘things as usual’. Those who professionally or through vocation frequent lecture rooms know well that for the potential young audience everything is new and it would be a real crime of arrogance and of distraction to ignore this.
One always returns to the classics; one can only recommence from them towards enlightenment. Happily and with fire …
